NSW: It's been 88 years, let's leave shark nets in the past!

The "Shark mitigation and deterrent measures" Senate Inquiry (2017) also found substantial evidence that Mesh Nets and Drumlines do not make any impact on safety, negatively impact the marine Ecosystem, and provide beach goers with a false sense of security - and recommended they cease in favour of modern non-lethal technologies.

Dear Ministers,

I write to you as my local MP, and also the two Ministers jointly responsible for New South Wales shark nets, as per the shark meshing Joint Management Agreement (JMA).

I understand that the Joint Management Agreement has not met its objectives for the past decade, and that all scientific advice before you, is that shark nets should not have been returned to the water on Sept 1st.

Ms Sharpe, you can help to achieve this by using your powers to terminate the JMA for failing to meet its objectives for over a decade. We feel this document acts as nothing more than a license to kill, and as the only such agreement in the entire state, has no place in modern Government.

Ms Moriarty, you can achieve this by following scientific advice of both the Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC) and Fisheries Scientific Committee (FSC) to discontinue the use of shark nets, in favour of the suite of modern non-lethal technologies already being successfully used in NSW.

- Drones for shark surveillance – 0 shark bites
- Electric deterrents and shark bite-resistant wetsuits – 0 shark bites
- Shark barriers – 0 shark bites
- Shark nets and catch-and-kill drumlines – 139 recorded shark bites (NSW - 51 shark bites, 50 non-fatal, 1 fatal. QLD - 42 shark bites, 39 non-fatal, 3 fatal. South Africa - 46 shark bites, 36 non-fatal, 10 fatal)

We have learnt so much about sharks and the ocean since 1937, and today NSW runs the most comprehensive, advanced shark mitigation program in the world, so it only makes sense to put this archaic and ineffective culling program behind us.

Thank you for your time, and I truly hope 2026 is the year that we bring NSW beach safety into the 21st century by ending the culling of sharks, in substitution for the non-lethal shark mitigation alternatives.
